Giri Govardhan is the most emblematic mountain in Vedic cosmology, also known as Giriraja (the king of mountains) , where one of Sri Krishna's lilas (pastimes) takes place, raising it, like an umbrella, with the little finger of his left hand to protect the town from the storm caused by the demigod Indra.

Therefore Govardhan is not considered different from Krishna ; many spiritual practitioners, monks, devotees, perform pilgrimages, purification rituals, and austerities in this sacred territory where the king of the mountains is located.
